10 Interesting Facts about Colombia

Colombia is located in the Northern tip of South America. The country is bordered by the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. Moreover, Venezuela and Brazil  are located to the East and SouthEast. Whereas, Peru and Ecuador occupy the Southern-Western Border. Meanwhile, Panama stands to the North West of Colombia. These are a few of the interesting facts about Colombia.

The country occupies 441,000 square miles (1,141,000 km squared) of land which roughly equates the size of Texas and California. This makes it the 25th largest country in the world. At the same time, it has a population of roughly 50 million people. Residents mostly live in cities and towns along the Caribbean coast and mountains.

In 1819, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador and Panama, all declared independence from Spain. They formed an alliance which became a country called “Gran Colombia”. Later, Venezuela and Ecuador separated in 1830.

Caño Cristales is a Colombian river that has 5 different colors. It is a natural wonder and an explosion of spectrums. The colors are yellow, green, blue, red and black.

This in turn opened the door for new plant species. Simultaneously, these are native plant types that live on the riverbed and are endemic to Colombia.
