Coronavirus Pathologist 9 Q&A: Facts vs Myths

To remove all doubts, we have conducted a small interview with a laboratory pathologist to better understand Coronavirus facts and precautions.

Q: What is Covid19?

A: Covid19 is the disease caused by Coronovirus. Each day, researchers are discovering more and more about it and about its mechanism.

Q: What are the first steps when returning home after work or grocery shopping?

A: Quickly take off your shoes, preferably while still outside the house. Then place them on a piece of cloth that has the following characteristics:
 
Soak the cloth with a bleaching solution. Clorox bleach is one popular type. It contains sodium hypochlorite, known for its sterilizing properties.
After around 30 minutes, wear disposable gloves and clean your shoes with Clorox wipes or any other disinfecting wipe.

A: You should wear your clothes only once per day if you leave the house. Therefore, place them directly into the washing machine for instant washing and disinfection. Alternatively, if your time does not allow that,  separate them in a laundry bag to be washed later on. 

Q: Should the temperature of the washing machine be very high?

A: Studies show that soap and detergents can kill the virus. Consequently, you may continue washing at normal temperature rates. However, if you feel safer with increasing it, then this is a personal choice.

Q: What about using the washer dryer?

A: Placing the items in the dryer is a good option. However, the best case scenario is putting the clothes in direct sunlight for at least 2 to 3 hours

However, it is worth noting that a global consensus is not there yet regarding the sunlight effect on coronavirus.

Q: How to clean packed food brought from outside?

A: Quickly dispose the plastic bags. As for the grocery items, you need to clean with diluted bleach. The criteria for dilution is 1 in 7.

Use a clean cloth soaked in the dilution and leave them undried for a minimum of 30 seconds.

A: Also dispose its plastic or paper bags. Place the bread in a tupperware. 

Q: How to clean vegetables and fruits?

A: Soak the vegetables in white vinegar and water for at least 10 min. You can also add salt to the mixture.

Q: What about products imported from infected countries, like coffee for example?

A: One of Coronavirus facts is that it lives for a maximum of 9 days outside a human body or a host. Therefore, it is unlikely that you will be buying and consuming coffee manufactured and shipped to your country within the 9 days. 

Having said that, when you boil the coffee, the virus immediately dies. Nonetheless, even for French Press coffee lovers, boiling the water before pouring into the pitcher, is sufficient to kill the virus.
