Nestled in the mighty Himalayas, framed by impressive snow-peaked mountains from all sides is the Valley of Flowers – a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This land boasts charming meadows of Alpine flowers with more than 300 species.
Located at a height of 3500 – 4500 metres high in the Chamoli district, Garhwal region of Uttarakhand state of India, this picture-perfect place is endowed with a diverse range of endemic flora. Moreover, it is not only picturesque but also has running streams and a beautiful backdrop of the mountains.
Valley of Flowers Historical Discovery
Historically, the beauty of the place was unknown to the world until in 1931, when three British mountaineers came here. In fact, they lost their way and happened to discover this alluring valley. Thereupon, they named it Valley of Flowers.

Valley of Flowers remains covered with a thick blanket of snow during the winter season. However, it is in full bloom during July, August and September. Therefore, this is the best time to explore the splendor of this magnificent place.
Moreover, the aqua waters of Pushpawati River bifurcates the valley into two parts. During the period of July till September, visitors can enjoy the dew drops of flowers, the rhythmic sound of flowing water and the romantic breeze. As per the local beliefs, this valley was inhabited by fairies. No wonder, it’s a fairy land.
Valley of Flowers Ecotourism and Exploration
The region is also home to some rare and endangered animal species and you may spot animals like Asiatic black deer, snow leopard, musk deer, red fox, brown bear and blue sheep.
The easiest way to reach is through Jolly Grant airport in Dehradun which has a direct flight connection from New Delhi. A full day 300-kms road journey on National Highway 58 will take you then to Govindghat, and from there the trek to Valley of flowers begins.
Quick Tips:
-You will need to start early and reach entry gate by 7 am to explore the Valley of Flowers fully.
-Entry fee for foreigners is INR 600 and is valid for 3 days and for any extra day INR 250 will be levied.
-If you wish to take a professional video camera inside the valley INR 1500 for a day is payable.
-Best time to visit is from July to September and the valley is open for visitors from June 01 till October 04 every year.
